What is gamma irradiation?

Gamma irradiation uses high-energy gamma rays that achieve high penetration depth at a relatively low dose rate. These rays specifically destroy the DNA of microorganisms, making bacteria, viruses and fungi permanently harmless. Compared to heat sterilization or chemical processes, the packaging remains intact because there is no significant temperature increase and no residues are left behind.

Compared to heat sterilization or chemical processes, the packaging remains intact because there is no significant temperature increase and no residues are left behind.

Gamma sterilization for packaging penetrates even complex geometries and fully reaches the inner surfaces of closed containers. This makes it ideal for medical packaging as well as food and pharmaceutical products where absolute sterility is critical.

Gamma irradiation for POHLI packaging

POHLI integrates gamma irradiation seamlessly into its range of glass bottles, aluminum closures and other packaging from the product portfolio. Whether aluminum products, bottles or components with delicate structures, irradiation ensures contamination-free packaging in the final state.

The method is suitable for materials such as glass, aluminum, and selected plastics that are resistant to radiation.

After approval of your specification, the process is carried out in certified facilities with a precisely controlled radiation dose.. Documented validation and traceability ensure the highest safety standards, as required in the medical and food sectors.

Advantages of gamma sterilization

Gamma irradiation for packaging materials offers unique characteristics that outperform conventional methods.

high penetration depth for safe sterilization of closed sterile packaging

no heat exposure, ideal for heat-sensitive contents

no chemical residues, environmentally friendly and residue-free

fast, scalable, and optimized for series production

The result is a packaging solution that convincingly combines protection, hygiene, and process reliability.

Application areas of gamma irradiation

Gamma irradiation is used for packaging wherever hygiene and sterility are central and a gentle process is required at the same time. Contamination-free packaging from the POHLI range is suitable for:

  • medical and diagnostics applications, especially sterile packaging for medical devices
  • pharmaceutical and biotechnological products
  • foods with high sterility requirements, for example baby food and infusion solutions
  • cosmetics and disinfectants in sensitive applications

Combined with refinements such as printing or embossing, this creates functional, market-ready solutions. POHLI checks material compatibility and dosage individually to ensure optimal results.

FAQ

Yes. This is one of the major advantages. Products can be sterilized in closed packaging without significantly increasing the temperature.

This depends on the packaging material and the product. We review your requirements with you and assess material compatibility.

Depending on the material, changes are possible. We therefore recommend a project-specific assessment and, if required, sampling before series release.
